Overview

Georgia is a smaller country in the Caucasus region that some Indian families consider for MBBS. Programmes for international students are often described as English medium, but that must be confirmed for the whole course, including clinical years, because the NMC regulations require it. As with every country, what matters is the specific university and programme: whether it meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations for your admission year, whether the internship is in the same institution and whether you hold a valid NEET UG qualification. Read the Indian Embassy and MEA advisories for the country yourself. Your counsellor verifies each point in writing before you commit.

Rules and regulations in Georgia

  • The Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia states that medical doctor programmes are accredited or authorised by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement. Ask the university for the programme's current decision from this body.
  • Admission is set by each university. Some Georgian universities say applicants must pass the national entrance examinations, and some say proof of English at a stated level can be accepted instead for the English-language programme. Ask each university for its written rule.
  • The programme for international students is usually described as English medium, but the whole programme including clinical years must be confirmed in writing, because NMC requires it. Local language is likely to be needed for patient contact.
  • A student visa and a residence permit are issued by the Georgian authorities. The type and the steps depend on the stay, so read the Embassy of Georgia in India or the Georgian government pages for the current process.
  • The Ministry states that holders of a Georgian MD may be employed as junior doctors under the Law of Georgia on Medical Practice. How this applies to a foreign student, and any local registration, must be checked with the Georgian authorities; we did not find a source that says more.
  • Check what the university says about online or distance classes. Read the current NMC notices on online or distance learning, and ask in writing how much of the programme is taught on campus and in hospitals.
  • Ask the university whether students from abroad need to register with any local body, and what documents the university gives you for this.
  • Georgia has universities that teach the programme in Georgian and others in English. Confirm that you are enrolled in the English-language group and that your degree document names the programme correctly.

After MBBS: the next steps

  • Back in India, a graduate of a foreign medical university must clear the screening test required by NMC for foreign medical graduates. Read the latest NMC and NBEMS notices for its current name and pattern.
  • After the screening test, NMC rules require a compulsory supervised internship in India. Check the current NMC notice for its length and the colleges where it can be done.
  • Registration with the State Medical Council or the NMC follows, as the current rules describe.
  • For postgraduate study in India, a graduate appears for NEET PG and takes part in counselling like other candidates, once registered. Check the eligibility rule for the year.
  • Georgia has its own postgraduate residency system for specialisation. Whether foreign graduates can enter it, and in which language, must be checked with the Georgian Ministry and the university.
  • Some graduates consider the USMLE (United States), PLAB (United Kingdom) or AMC (Australia) examinations. Each has its own eligibility rules, so check these with the authority that runs the examination.

Questions to verify before you commit

  • Is the university listed and recognised by the education authority of the country, and is the programme acceptable under the NMC FMGL Regulations for your year of admission? Ask for this in writing.
  • Will the whole programme, including clinical years, be taught and examined in English? Ask what the student will need in the local language for hospital work.
  • Will the internship of the required length be done in the same institution where the student studies? Ask who certifies it and in what form.
  • Does the student hold, or will the student hold, a valid NEET UG qualification as required for your admission year? Check the current NMC notice.
  • What is the name and format of the screening test required by NMC today, who conducts it, and what must be submitted to NMC to be eligible to appear? Read the latest NMC and NBEMS notices yourself.
  • What does the Indian Embassy for the country and the MEA currently advise for travel and for students? Read the advisory pages directly and again before departure.
  • What are the arrangements for hostel, food suited to your family, health insurance and medical care in Georgia? Ask for them in writing.
  • What does the admission letter, agreement and refund policy say? Read every clause and ask for an itemised written statement of all charges before paying anything.
  • Ask how the university prepares students for patient contact when patients speak the local language, and what language hospital teaching uses.
  • Is the country's academic year and entry timing compatible with the NMC rules for your batch? Ask for the dates in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Is an MBBS from Georgia valid in India?

It can be, if the university and the programme meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations in force for your admission year and the graduate then clears the screening test required by NMC and completes the internship in India as the rules say. Validity is checked university by university and year by year, so confirm it in writing from NMC sources.

How long is the MBBS programme abroad?

The NMC regulations require at least 54 months of instruction, and an internship of at least 12 months in the same institution where the student studied. A programme shorter than this, or an internship done elsewhere, may not be accepted. Always check the current NMC notice.

Is NEET compulsory to study MBBS abroad?

For Indian students who want to practise in India after a foreign degree, NMC rules require a valid NEET UG qualification. A university may admit you without it, but that does not change what NMC requires. Check the rule for your admission year.

Can I study in my own language or in the local language?

The NMC rules require English as the medium for the whole programme. Even so, students often need the local language to talk to patients during clinical training, so ask the university how this is handled.

What exam must I pass to practise in India?

Graduates from abroad must clear the screening test that NMC requires. Its name, pattern and conducting body have changed over time, so read the latest NMC and NBEMS notices. We explain the current position to you at the start.

Is it safe to study in Georgia?

We do not make safety judgements. The Indian Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs publish advisories for Indian citizens. Read them before you decide, and again before travel. Situations can change.

Can you promise a medical licence or a seat?

No. Admission is decided by the university, and the licence in India depends on the student meeting the NMC rules and clearing the required test. We help you check, prepare and avoid mistakes, but we cannot promise any outcome.

Which documents do I need?

Usually class 10 and 12 certificates and marksheets, NEET UG scorecard, passport, photographs, medical and other certificates, and attested copies as the university and embassy ask. The exact list and attestation steps depend on the university and year, so we give you a written list.

Do you guarantee admission or licensing outcomes?

No. Admission is decided by the university and licensing by the relevant authority. We verify, explain and support; we do not promise outcomes.
