Overview

Russia is one of the older and larger destinations that Indian families consider for MBBS. Medical education there is offered in more than one language, and some programmes for international students are taught in English. Before you consider it, you need three things in writing: that the specific university and programme meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations for your year of admission, that the whole course including clinical years is in English, and that the internship is done in the same institution. You also need to read the Indian Embassy and MEA advisories yourself, because conditions for travel and study can change. This page gives general guidance only. Your counsellor verifies each point for the current year before you commit.

Rules and regulations in Russia

  • Universities set their own admission requirements for international students. Ask each university for the current rules, including the school subjects and any entrance test or interview, and do not rely on an agent's summary.
  • Study in Russia needs a student visa and residence permission issued under Russian rules. Ask the university for the current steps and read the Indian Embassy pages.
  • Teaching for home students is in Russian. Even when an English-medium programme exists, students usually need Russian for hospital work, so ask how the university teaches it.
  • The Ministry of Science and Higher Education oversees higher education. Rosobrnadzor (the Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science) handles licensing and state accreditation of educational activity. Ask the university for its licence and accreditation documents.
  • Some medical universities report to the Ministry of Health and others to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Check which body the university reports to and whose name is on the diploma.
  • The NMC rules require English for the whole programme and the internship in the same institution. Check the NMC notice for your year on online or distance classes.
  • Whether a foreign graduate may work as a doctor in Russia is decided by Russian health authorities under their own rules. This was not confirmed from the sources read, so ask the university and Russian authorities directly.
  • Read the Indian Embassy in Moscow and MEA advisories yourself before deciding and before travel.

After MBBS: the next steps

  • Back in India, a foreign medical graduate must follow the NMC rules: the screening test required by NMC for foreign graduates, then a compulsory supervised internship in India as the rules say.
  • After that, state or NMC registration is needed before practising in India. Read the latest NMC notice for the exact documents.
  • For postgraduate medical study in India, NEET PG is the entrance exam. Check the current eligibility rules with NBEMS and NMC for foreign graduates.
  • Reference sources describe clinical residency and doctoral study at Russian medical universities. Whether and how foreigners can join them must be asked at the university.
  • International exams such as USMLE (United States), PLAB (United Kingdom) and AMC (Australia) are options some graduates look at. Check the eligibility and rules with each exam's own authority.
  • Keep every certificate, transcript and internship record safe, because NMC and other authorities will ask for them.

Questions to verify before you commit

  • Is the university listed and recognised by the education authority of the country, and is the programme acceptable under the NMC FMGL Regulations for your year of admission? Ask for this in writing.
  • Will the whole programme, including clinical years, be taught and examined in English? Ask what the student will need in the local language for hospital work.
  • Will the internship of the required length be done in the same institution where the student studies? Ask who certifies it and in what form.
  • Does the student hold, or will the student hold, a valid NEET UG qualification as required for your admission year? Check the current NMC notice.
  • What is the name and format of the screening test required by NMC today, who conducts it, and what must be submitted to NMC to be eligible to appear? Read the latest NMC and NBEMS notices yourself.
  • What does the Indian Embassy for the country and the MEA currently advise for travel and for students? Read the advisory pages directly and again before departure.
  • What are the arrangements for hostel, food suited to your family, health insurance and medical care in Russia? Ask for them in writing.
  • What does the admission letter, agreement and refund policy say? Read every clause and ask for an itemised written statement of all charges before paying anything.
  • Because programmes in the country may be taught in the local language for home students, ask which language each year of your own batch is taught in and examined in.
  • Has the Indian Embassy in Moscow or the MEA issued any notice that affects students or travel to the university city? Read it directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is an MBBS from Russia valid in India?

It can be, if the university and the programme meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations in force for your admission year and the graduate then clears the screening test required by NMC and completes the internship in India as the rules say. Validity is checked university by university and year by year, so confirm it in writing from NMC sources.

How long is the MBBS programme abroad?

The NMC regulations require at least 54 months of instruction, and an internship of at least 12 months in the same institution where the student studied. A programme shorter than this, or an internship done elsewhere, may not be accepted. Always check the current NMC notice.

Is NEET compulsory to study MBBS abroad?

For Indian students who want to practise in India after a foreign degree, NMC rules require a valid NEET UG qualification. A university may admit you without it, but that does not change what NMC requires. Check the rule for your admission year.

Can I study in my own language or in the local language?

The NMC rules require English as the medium for the whole programme. Even so, students often need the local language to talk to patients during clinical training, so ask the university how this is handled.

What exam must I pass to practise in India?

Graduates from abroad must clear the screening test that NMC requires. Its name, pattern and conducting body have changed over time, so read the latest NMC and NBEMS notices. We explain the current position to you at the start.

Is it safe to study in Russia?

We do not make safety judgements. The Indian Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs publish advisories for Indian citizens. Read them before you decide, and again before travel. Situations can change.

Can you promise a medical licence or a seat?

No. Admission is decided by the university, and the licence in India depends on the student meeting the NMC rules and clearing the required test. We help you check, prepare and avoid mistakes, but we cannot promise any outcome.

Which documents do I need?

Usually class 10 and 12 certificates and marksheets, NEET UG scorecard, passport, photographs, medical and other certificates, and attested copies as the university and embassy ask. The exact list and attestation steps depend on the university and year, so we give you a written list.

Do you guarantee admission or licensing outcomes?

No. Admission is decided by the university and licensing by the relevant authority. We verify, explain and support; we do not promise outcomes.
