Branch versus college
Students often face a trade-off: a popular branch in a lower-ranked college or a different branch in a stronger college. There is no universal answer. Look at your goals, the college's teaching, peers and industry links, and how much you can learn on your own.
Look past the name
- Read the syllabus: an "AI" or "Data Science" label means little without real courses and projects
- Check labs, faculty profiles and research or project output
- Ask for placement data for that branch and year, including median outcomes and roles
- Understand which skills you will need to build outside class
Interests that map to branches
- Software, systems, algorithms: CSE, IT
- Data and learning systems: AI, Data Science
- Hardware, embedded, communication: ECE
- Machines, design, manufacturing: Mechanical
- Infrastructure: Civil
- Power and energy: Electrical
A note on trends
Hiring demand changes with the economy. Choose a branch you can stay motivated in for four years and build skills continuously; do not choose only by this year's headlines.
