Category, domicile and quota: the terms explained

Plain-language meanings of category, domicile, home-state quota, All India Quota and other terms you will meet in counselling.

Why these terms matter

Counselling portals use many terms. Understanding them tells you which seats you can compete for and which certificates you need.

Common terms

  • Category: the reservation category you belong to (for example General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS), supported by a valid certificate in the required format
  • Domicile: your state of residence for admission purposes, as defined by each state
  • Home-state quota: seats reserved for candidates from that state
  • All India Quota (AIQ): seats open to candidates from any state through central counselling
  • Management or NRI quota: seats governed by separate rules in private institutions
  • Horizontal reservations: for example for persons with disabilities or other special groups

What to do

  • Check each term's definition in the current bulletin; rules differ by state and year
  • Apply early for certificates, since they can take time
  • Match names, dates and details across documents
