Overview
UGC NET is a national test for people who want to teach in universities and colleges or do research. Depending on the score and the category you apply for, it can make you eligible for Assistant Professor posts, for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) together with Assistant Professor eligibility, or for admission to a PhD. The test covers many subjects and is held on a computer. NTA conducts it, normally more than once a year. The exact subjects, pattern, dates and rules are published in the information bulletin of each cycle, so always read the current one.

Frequently asked questions
Is UGC NET compulsory for a PhD?
No. Some universities admit through their own entrance test. Many accept UGC NET qualifiers through an interview, as the UGC regulations allow. Read each university's prospectus.
What is JRF?
Junior Research Fellowship. It is a category you can qualify in through the test, and it is linked to research funding rules set by the fellowship body. See the bulletin for details.
Who conducts UGC NET?
The National Testing Agency conducts it on behalf of the UGC.
How many times is it held?
It is held in cycles through the year. The schedule is announced for each cycle, so check the NTA website.
Can I apply with a final-year master's result pending?
The bulletin usually states conditions for such candidates. Read the current bulletin carefully.
Can I choose any subject?
You choose from the list in the bulletin, normally the subject of your master's degree or a closely related one.
Does qualifying mean I get a PhD seat?
