Choice filling and strategy
A ranked choice list built with you, explained in plain language and reviewed before you lock it.
Overview
Choice filling is the stage where you tell the counselling authority which courses and colleges you want, in order of preference. The order matters a great deal: the system allots the highest choice you qualify for, so a carefully ranked list can change the result. We build that list with you and review it before you lock it.
Who it is for
- Students entering NEET UG, NEET PG, JoSAA or state counselling for the first time
- Families who have a rank and need to turn it into a sensible list of options
- Students who want to understand the difference between freeze, float and slide before the round
- Parents who want to see exactly what has been filled and why
- Students whose earlier round did not give the seat they wanted
How it works, step by step
- 1Know your positionWe start from your rank, category, domicile and quota, and look at the seat matrix and the past closing ranks published for earlier years. These are guides only, because seat numbers, reservation and demand change.
- 2Decide the prioritiesYou tell us what matters most: the course, the college, the city, the fee, or the type of institution. A clear order of priorities decides every later step.
- 3Collect the optionsWe list all eligible courses and colleges in that counselling, with their fees, location and seat categories, from the official information brochure and seat matrix.
- 4Rank the listWe arrange the choices in the order you truly prefer them. We mix options that are safe, options with a fair chance and options that are a reach, so the list covers more than one outcome.
- 5Review before lockingWe check for missing choices, wrong codes, duplicates and an order that does not match your priorities. Many students lose out by leaving out choices that they would have accepted.
- 6Lock and save proofOn the day, we help you submit and lock within the window, and save the confirmation of the locked list.
- 7Read the result and decideAfter the result we explain what each option means in that round, such as accept and report, freeze, or float for an upgrade, and what happens to any deposit under that counselling's rules.
What we check and consider
- The official seat matrix, quota and reservation for the current year
- Past closing ranks by round, only as an indicator of where seats have gone
- Whether your category and domicile certificates are valid for the seats you list
- Fee, bond, hostel and other charges for each choice
- Recognition status of the college and course
- Rules of the round: upgrade options, security deposit, seat-leaving penalty and exit
- That no choice is listed that you would refuse to accept
- That the list is locked before the deadline and the confirmation is saved
What you get
- A ranked choice list with safe, good-chance and reach options
- A plain-language explanation of every option and its trade-offs
- A review of your final list before you lock it
- Support on the day of choice filling and locking
- Guidance on what to do after each round's result
- A back-up plan for the next round or another counselling
What to keep ready
- Rank letter or score card and the admit card
- Registration number and login of the counselling portal, created by you
- Category and reservation certificates, if claimed
- Domicile or residence proof for state counselling
- Fee and budget limit set by the family
- List of preferred cities and courses, and ones to avoid
- The official information brochure and seat matrix of the current year
- Mobile phone or computer with a stable internet connection
How long it takes
Choice filling opens and closes on dates set by the counselling authority, and each round has its own window. Lists can often be edited until the lock time, but after locking they cannot be changed. We therefore prepare the list in advance and review it again just before the lock. All of this depends on the counselling calendar of the current year.
What we do not do
- We do not guarantee any seat, branch or college. The result is generated by the authority from rank, choices and seat availability.
- We never fill or lock choices without your approval, and we never ask for your password or OTP.
- Past closing ranks are a guide, not a prediction. Seats, quotas and demand change.
- We cannot change a result, reopen a round or extend a deadline.
We are a counselling service. We do not guarantee any seat, college, branch or result. Always confirm dates, fees and rules on the official notice of the current year.
Questions answered
Why does the order of choices matter?
Most counselling systems go down your list from the top and allot the first choice for which your rank qualifies. If a college you prefer is placed below one you like less, you may be allotted the lower one, even though you would have preferred the other.
How many choices should we fill?
As many as you would be willing to accept, within what the portal allows. Leaving out acceptable options can mean no seat in a round, so the list should be broad but still in your true order.
What do freeze, float and slide mean?
The terms vary by counselling, but in general freezing means accepting the seat and leaving the process, floating means keeping the seat while remaining eligible for an upgrade in a later round, and sliding means moving to a better branch in the same college. Read the rules of the current notice because they differ between counsellings.
What happens if we do not report to the allotted college?
In many counsellings a seat that is accepted and not joined can lead to loss of the deposit, a penalty, or a bar on further rounds. The rules differ, so we read them with you before you accept any seat.
Can we use closing ranks from earlier years?
Yes, as a guide to which options may be realistic. They are not a promise, because seats, reservation, the number of candidates and their ranks change every year.
Is choice filling the same for JoSAA and for NEET counselling?
The idea is similar, a ranked list, but the portals, rounds, quotas, fees and withdrawal rules are different. We explain the exact process of the counselling you are in.
Can you help with NEET PG choice filling?
Yes. NEET PG counselling involves branch and college choices, and the quota, service-bond and fee rules vary. We prepare the list with you and explain each rule of the current notice.
