Overview

B.Tech in Information Technology (IT) is a four-year degree that focuses on building and running information systems for organisations. It has a large overlap with Computer Science, but often gives more weight to databases, networks, web and mobile applications, information security and managing systems. Colleges differ in how they separate IT from CSE, so compare syllabi. Admission is through JEE Main and JoSAA/CSAB for central institutes such as NITs and IIITs, state entrance tests for state seats, or institute tests. This page explains the route and the course in general terms.

Eligibility

Typical pattern. The official notice for the current year is final.

  • Class 12 (or an equivalent examination) from a recognised board, passed or appearing. Physics and Mathematics are needed, along with one more subject from the list in the current AICTE handbook.
  • The AICTE handbook sets a minimum aggregate in the required subjects, with a lower figure for reserved categories. Check the exact subjects and marks in the handbook for the year you apply, because the list can change.
  • Some states and institutions add their own conditions, such as a state domicile rule or a state entrance test in the Class 12 subjects. Read the notice of the state or institute you are applying to.
  • IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes have their own minimum Class 12 conditions, set in the JoSAA/CSAB brochures. Candidates for IITs must also qualify in JEE Advanced and meet its rules on years and attempts.
  • Diploma holders and some B.Sc. graduates can enter the second year (lateral entry) in many universities. The rules are set by AICTE and by the university or state.

Entrance exams for this course

Entrance and counselling

  • Central route: take JEE Main (conducted by the National Testing Agency). Its rank is used by JoSAA for NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs), and by CSAB for later special rounds.
  • IITs: you must first qualify in JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced, whose rank is used by JoSAA for IIT seats. Both ranks are separate and the rules change each year, so read both bulletins.
  • JoSAA runs online counselling in several rounds: register, fill and lock choices of institute and branch, receive an allotment, and accept it by paying the seat acceptance fee shown on the portal.
  • State route: many states hold their own entrance test or use JEE Main for seats in state colleges, and run their own counselling. For example, Maharashtra uses MHT CET and a centralised admission process run through the State CET Cell.
  • Private and deemed universities may use their own entrance tests, JEE Main scores or Class 12 marks. Each publishes its own process. Check that the university and the programme are approved by UGC and AICTE.
  • Seats are filled by category (such as General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) and by quotas such as home state, other states, women supernumerary seats and persons with disability, as in recent cycles.
  • Some state and private institutes treat IT as a separate branch with its own seats and counselling code. Always check the branch code and name in the counselling list.

Is it for you?

A good fit if

  • You like working with systems that people in organisations use daily.
  • You are happy with a mix of coding, databases and networks.
  • You like building practical applications.
  • You can communicate well with non-technical users.

Think twice if

  • You expect a large difference from CSE without checking the syllabus; often the overlap is large.
  • You want deep hardware or electronics content.
  • You are choosing the branch only because the CSE seat did not come.
  • You are not ready for continuous learning of new tools.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a branch only because it is trending
  • Ignoring college quality, faculty and placement evidence
  • Filling choices in the wrong order
  • Not understanding home-state quota rules
  • Picking freeze, float or slide without understanding the consequences
  • Skipping the reporting step after allotment

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IT and CSE?

The two overlap a lot. CSE usually goes deeper into theory, algorithms and systems. IT usually leans towards applications, databases, networks and information systems. The balance differs by university, so compare syllabi.

Can an IT graduate do the same jobs as a CSE graduate?

Employers usually look at your skills and projects. Both degrees lead to software and IT roles. Hiring rules differ by employer.

Which entrance exam is needed?

JEE Main for central institutes through JoSAA/CSAB. State colleges may use a state test or JEE Main, and private universities may have their own tests.

Is IT offered by IITs?

Offerings change each year. Check the JoSAA programme list for the year you apply.

Do I need Chemistry in Class 12?

The AICTE handbook allows more than one subject combination. Central institutes often ask for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Check the current rules.

What if I get IT in a good college but wanted CSE?

Compare syllabus, labs and your interests. Many students find the two branches close. Make the choice with facts, not only the name.
