Overview

JEE Main is the national entrance test for engineering, architecture and planning courses. Its scores are used for admission to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other centrally funded technical institutions through JoSAA counselling, and by many states for their own colleges. It is also the first step to JEE Advanced, the test for the IITs. The National Testing Agency holds it, in recent cycles in more than one session in a year. The pattern and rules are in the information bulletin of each year.

Who can apply

Check the current information bulletin: age, attempts and qualification rules can change.

  • Students who have passed Class 12 or an equivalent exam, or who are appearing in it in the year, can apply
  • For B.E. / B.Tech, the subjects needed in Class 12 include Physics and Mathematics along with another subject specified in the bulletin
  • For B.Arch and B.Planning, the subjects required are in the bulletin
  • There is a limit on the number of years in which you can appear after Class 12. Read the exact rule in the bulletin.
  • The age limit and minimum marks for admission in an institute are set by the institute or the counselling authority, not by NTA. Check JoSAA or the state notice.

Exam pattern

As described in recent official bulletins. The bulletin of the current cycle is final.

PapersIn recent cycles there has been a paper for B.E. / B.Tech and separate papers for B.Arch and B.Planning. The bulletin lists the papers you can take.
B.E. / B.Tech subjectsPhysics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
B.ArchMathematics, an aptitude test and a drawing test. The drawing test is taken on paper.
Question typeIn recent cycles, multiple choice questions and questions with a number as the answer. The bulletin shows how many to attempt in each section.
MarkingCorrect answers earn marks and some wrong answers carry a deduction. The scheme is in the bulletin.
SessionsIn recent cycles the test has been held in more than one session each year, and the better score counted for the rank list. Confirm the rule in the current bulletin.
Number of questionsNot stated here, because the structure has changed over the years. Read it in the current bulletin.

  • The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts additional rounds for seats left after JoSAA
  • Many states use JEE Main scores for their own colleges, with their own registration, domicile and category rules
  • Some private and deemed universities use JEE Main scores, or their own tests, for admission
