The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) is a general undergraduate degree in subjects such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, botany, zoology, computer science, statistics and electronics.
Class 12 (or equivalent) with science subjects from a recognised board. The subjects needed depend on the B.Sc subject, for example Mathematics for physics or mathematics honours, or Biology for life sciences.
Many central universities admit through CUET UG, run by the National Testing Agency. The university lists the test subjects that count for each course.
Overview
The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) is a general undergraduate degree in subjects such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, botany, zoology, computer science, statistics and electronics. It builds a base for research, teaching, laboratory work and postgraduate study. Central universities mostly admit through CUET UG, while state and private universities use merit lists or their own processes. Under the National Education Policy, universities may offer a three-year degree or a four-year degree with flexible entry and exit.

Eligibility
Typical pattern. The official notice for the current year is final.
- Class 12 (or equivalent) with science subjects from a recognised board. The subjects needed depend on the B.Sc subject, for example Mathematics for physics or mathematics honours, or Biology for life sciences.
- The minimum marks, in total and sometimes in specific subjects, are set by the university and differ by category. Confirm them in the prospectus.
- Some universities offer B.Sc in subjects such as computer science or statistics to students with Mathematics and not Biology, and others the reverse. Read the programme notice.
- Where CUET UG is used, you must take the test subjects that the university lists for your chosen course.
- Age limits, if any, are set by the university. Most do not set an upper limit; check the notice.
Entrance exams for this course
Entrance and counselling
- Many central universities admit through CUET UG, run by the National Testing Agency. The university lists the test subjects that count for each course.
- After the result, each participating university conducts its own counselling or admission rounds.
- State universities and affiliated colleges commonly use Class 12 marks, state portals or their own processes.
- Private universities may use merit, interviews or their own tests.
- Honours (single subject focus) and general programmes (multiple subjects) can have different structures. Read what is offered.
- Reservation and domicile rules follow the university or state notice.
Admission process
The usual journey, step by step. Dates and rules for the current year are on the official notice.
- 1Check eligibilityConfirm subject and mark conditions for your chosen B.Sc subject in the prospectus

What you study
- A major science subject such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, botany, zoology, statistics or computer science
- Minor or related science subjects
- Practical and laboratory work in each science subject
- Mathematics, statistics and computing basics
- Languages and communication
- Environmental studies
- Skill and ability enhancement courses chosen by the university
- Projects, internships or field work
- Dissertation or research project in the final year where offered
Year by year
- Introductory courses and practicals in major and minor subjects
- Language and skill courses
- Core courses in the major subject
- More laboratory training
- Advanced topics, projects or internship
- Exit with a bachelor's degree, or continue
- Honours or research track with a dissertation
- Specialised electives
Skills you build
Careers and next steps
- Higher study: M.Sc, integrated programmes and PhD
- Research assistant and laboratory roles
- Teaching, after further qualification such as B.Ed and eligibility tests
- Quality, testing and technical roles in industry
- Data, analytics and IT roles with added skills
- Competitive exams for government and defence services, through separate preparation
- Management study through MBA entrance tests
- Science communication and technical writing
Is it for you?
A good fit if
- You like understanding how things work and enjoy practical work.
- You are open to studying further, since many science careers need a master's degree.
- You want a flexible base before specialising.
- You are comfortable with mathematics and data, where your subject needs them.
Think twice if
- You expect a broad choice of jobs straight after a general degree without adding skills.
- You do not enjoy laboratory work or mathematics.
- You are mixing up B.Sc with a professional course such as nursing, pharmacy or engineering, which have separate admission routes.
- You have not checked which subjects your target postgraduate course will need.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Not checking university or programme approval
- Missing the application window
- Ignoring documents needed for category or domicile benefits
- Choosing by name rather than curriculum and outcomes

Frequently asked questions
Is B.Sc better than B.Tech?
Neither is better in general. B.Sc is science-focused and usually three years. B.Tech is engineering-focused and four years. Choose by interest and goal.
Can I take B.Sc without Mathematics?
Yes for life sciences and several other subjects. Physics, mathematics, statistics and computer science honours usually need Mathematics. Check each programme.
Is CUET UG compulsory for B.Sc?
It is needed for universities that use it, mainly central universities. Many other universities admit on marks or their own process.
What is honours versus general B.Sc?
Honours focuses deeply on one subject. A general programme spreads across several subjects. Universities now describe this through major and minor subjects, so read the structure.
What is the four-year option?
Under the National Education Policy and the UGC framework, universities may offer a four-year undergraduate programme with research. Check whether your chosen university offers it and how its exit options work.
Do I need a master's degree?
For research and teaching, yes. Some laboratory, quality and data roles are open after the bachelor's degree, but options widen with further study and skills.
Does Padhaidekho guarantee admission?
No. Admission depends on the official counselling authority, your eligibility and merit. We guide you, verify information against official notices and keep you on track.
How Padhaidekho helps
