Biotechnology uses living cells and biological systems to make products and solve problems in health, food, farming and the environment.
B.Sc Biotechnology: Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Some universities accept Mathematics in place of Biology. The subject combination is set by each university.
B.Sc Biotechnology at central and many other universities uses CUET UG scores. The Common University Entrance Test is run by the National Testing Agency, and each university states which test subjects it counts.
Overview
Biotechnology uses living cells and biological systems to make products and solve problems in health, food, farming and the environment. At undergraduate level it comes in two main forms. The B.Sc is a science degree with a focus on biology and laboratory work. The B.Tech (or B.E.) is an engineering degree that adds process and equipment topics. The two have different entrance routes, so check which one you are applying for. Many careers in the field need a master's degree or research work later.

Eligibility
Typical pattern. The official notice for the current year is final.
- B.Sc Biotechnology: Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Some universities accept Mathematics in place of Biology. The subject combination is set by each university.
- B.Tech or B.E. Biotechnology: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and often Biology or Biotechnology as an option. Check the rules of the counselling or institute.
- Minimum marks in the qualifying exam differ by university and category. Read the current prospectus or counselling notice.
- Age limits, where any exist, are set by the test or university. Check the current notice.
- Attempt limits for entrance tests are set by the test body, not by the course. Read the bulletin of the test you plan to take.

- B.Sc Biotechnology at central and many other universities uses CUET UG scores. The Common University Entrance Test is run by the National Testing Agency, and each university states which test subjects it counts.
- Some state and private universities admit on Class 12 marks or their own tests.
- B.Tech Biotechnology at institutes that use JEE Main follows the national or state counselling for engineering seats. JEE Main scores are used for the national process; state counselling uses state rules.
- Several state engineering tests and private institute tests are also used. Which tests apply depends on the state and institute.
- Seat allotment follows the counselling schedule, with reservation and domicile rules of the authority.
- Look at the laboratories, faculty and research and industry links before you choose a course, as these shape your learning.
Admission process
The usual journey, step by step. Dates and rules for the current year are on the official notice.
- 1Decide the degree typeChoose between B.Sc (science route) and B.Tech (engineering route) based on your subjects and goals
- 2Check eligibilityConfirm subjects, marks and age in the notice of each test and institute
- 3Appear for the examTake CUET UG, JEE Main or the state or institute test that your chosen courses accept
- 4Register for counsellingCreate an account on the portal of the university or counselling authority
- 5Fill and lock choicesList courses and institutes in order of preference and lock them before the deadline
- 6Seat allotmentA seat is offered based on the score, category and preferences
- 7Report and confirmPay the dues shown by the institute, submit your documents and join on time

Is it for you?
A good fit if
- You enjoy biology and chemistry and like laboratory work.
- You are curious about how living systems can be used to make useful products.
- You are ready to study further, for example M.Sc or M.Tech, if the career requires it.
- You are comfortable with careful, repetitive experimental work.
Think twice if
- You expect a broad range of jobs straight after a basic undergraduate degree: many roles ask for postgraduate study.
- You dislike laboratory work or biology-heavy theory.
- You are choosing between B.Sc and B.Tech without checking the different routes and subjects.
- You are picking the course only for its name, without checking the laboratory facilities.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Not checking university or programme approval
- Missing the application window
- Ignoring documents needed for category or domicile benefits
- Choosing by name rather than curriculum and outcomes

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between B.Sc and B.Tech Biotechnology?
B.Sc is a three-year science degree that focuses on biology and laboratory methods. B.Tech is a four-year engineering degree that adds process design, equipment and industrial scale-up. Their entrance routes also differ.
Can I take it without Mathematics?
For B.Sc usually yes, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. B.Tech generally needs Mathematics. Check each programme's notice.
Is NEET needed for Biotechnology?
No. NEET UG is for medical and allied courses. Biotechnology uses CUET UG, JEE Main or institute and state processes.
Is a master's degree necessary?
Not always, but research and many industry roles prefer or require postgraduate study.
Is Biotechnology the same as Biomedical Engineering?
No. Biotechnology works with biological systems and products. Biomedical engineering designs devices and systems for healthcare.
Which official bodies support biotechnology education and research?
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, supports education, research and policy in the field. UGC and AICTE regulate degree programmes.
Does Padhaidekho guarantee admission?
No. Admission depends on the official counselling authority, your eligibility and merit. We guide you, verify information against official notices and keep you on track.
